There’s been a lot of chatter about some of the amazing AAA and indie games at Summer Game Fest, and rightly so. We saw games like Lego Horizon Adventures, Civilization VII, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves to Fable and South of Midnight, but for those that can’t afford the hefty showcase fee of $250,000 per trailer, there are other showcases such as the Guerrilla Collective who dropped some dope games you may have missed out on.
But don’t worry, we’ve got you.
Below are our top 10 games of the Guerrilla Collective that you should absolutely check out. Remember if you’re feeling them, make sure to wishlist them on Steam!
Wreckless
From Free Range Games, the team made up of former Tony Hawk Developers, we've got Wreckless, a MMO skateboarding game where you skate, build classic warehouse parks with halfpipes, laser lights, and mini-games and share with the rest of the world. Indie skating games generally do well, with Roll7 delivering 2 bangers, so the stage is set.
Egging On
This game caught my attention and not just because I’m Ghanaian. It first reminded me of the ball level in the classic Crash Bandicoot games but he mentioned games like Getting Over It and I see it too. You play as an egg in all its fragile glory. From the shop to the henhouse, roll, jump and use the environment to get to safety and avoid falling to your bitter end. If you're an indie developer, I also suggest you check out the showcase video, there's good use of sound, storytelling and narration.
Constance
Someone called it Silksong with colour and I sort of get it, but you have to play it. Beautiful game, smooth mechanics and amazing fun. If you get a chance to play the demo, you’ll enjoy it as much as I did in this indie metroidvania game. They’re fun on social media too.
Gori: Cuddly Carnage
Not gonna lie, nothing cuddly about Gori but definitely chaotic carnage. You play as a cat (already winning) but not in the traditional cat exploration sense. Armed with a weaponized skateboard, fight your way through hordes of these unicorn zombielike hybrids as you try to save the galaxy. For the indie gaming action and platforming fans.
Just Crow Things
Bird gang stand up. Looking like a more chaotic Untitled Goose Game (don’t know how???) we have Just Crow Things, the sandbox-y adventure game, you must become the coolest bird in town by earning the trust of new animal friends, by causing unrivalled chaos on the human population. I particularly enjoyed watching the crow pooping flames falling on the unsuspecting public.
Fera The Sundered Tribes
Fera The Sundered Tribes is a mixture of monster hunting survival action RPG with incredible aerial combat as you take on monsters with a wild barrage of attacks. In addition to the violence, there are village building and tribe management elements as you craft weapons and potions to embark on missions on the ground and take the monsters down. This game looks pretty decent but will be relying heavily on an engaged community to really explore this world.
Hotel Architect
For the sim management lovers and me :). Show your creativity, as you build stunning hotels from the ground up around the world. You will need to appease the harshest of critics, satisfy the needs of a variety of guests, and control the logistical chain full of unexpected obstacles, in order to achieve an illustrious 5-star rating. I secretly love these type of games, it’s why I sink so many hours into Career Mode and MyGM on WWE 2K, and I love business. Can’t wait to chill with this game.
Deathbound
There was a game with a similar concept to this that I was excited about, that allowed you to switch in party members for combat. With that game it took you to your ancestors in a different time to finish the fight. In this one, you utilise the party's skills in order to defeat enemies in this soulslike game, allowing you to piece together incredible combos to become victorious. Definitely ambitious in a genre that has brought us so many incredible games, but this game has the potential to join them.
ANTONBLAST
Rayman Legends x Sonic on crack? Maybe. This is a fast-paced explosive action platformer that's all about destruction as you play as Anton (or Annie) as you race to get your prized possessions from Satan himself. Cow and Chicken fans, check out his design, doesn’t he look familiar?
Crypt Custodian
Shoutout Kyle, he brought us Islets and he’s bringing us another banger. I can assure you it is, I played the demo. You play as Pluto - a mischievous cat who has died, and is sentenced to be the afterworld's janitor, forever. Which I don’t think is fair, a small mistake was made, I feel like it was a bit mean but okay. Explore the vast grounds that surround the palace, battle beasts with your trusty broom, and gain new abilities to expand your map. Music is dope, enemies are well balanced, and I’ve never felt more powerful swinging a broom around. Lots of fun to be had.
